In case you missed it: Arctic Man and Beat Beethoven

A couple of big spring time events happened over the past two weeks. Here’s what went down in case you missed it.

Arctic Man

Arctic Man took place on Friday, April 11. For the third year in a row, the team of skier Marco Sullivan and snowmachiner Tyler Aklestad won the men’s ski event.

Skier Shelly Robertson and snowmachiner Ashley Axhelm won women’s ski. Snowboarder Carly Brennman and snowmachiner Ashley Nicoli won women’s snowboard. Skier Kurt Oatway and snowmachiner Charles Potter won the adaptive skiing class. Snowboarder James Scott and snowmachiner Casey Boylan won men’s snowboard.

Arctic Man is a challenging ski and snowmachine race that involves a snowmachiner towing a skier or snowboarder to the top of a mountain and the skier racing down. It takes place at Summit Lake every spring.

Beat Beethoven

The Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra’s Beat Beethoven 5k took place on Saturday, April 12. Aj Schirack took first place overall with a time of 16:54. Aaron Martin took second, and Sam Herreid took third.

Dana Fjar took first place for the women with a time of 18:39. Erika Burr took second, and Taryn Lopez took third.

During the Beat Beethoven 5k, runners try to finish the course within 31 minutes, the length of Beethoven’s “Fifth Symphony,” which plays during the race.
